The GW Band Boosters performs many interesting and diverse tasks in support of the George West High School music program. We meet monthly during the school year in the GW Band Room or other predetermined locations on the second Monday of each month to plan events and discuss how we can support the band. Some of the activities we perform each year include:
Each year the band boosters coordinate a banquet for all band students to honor graduating seniors. During the banquet, we present the scholarship awards, hear from the Music Director and students, and view the DVD that is prepared each year.
The football program duties involve a lot of parent involvement at all GW home games. Money raised by this event pays for half time refreshments for the band. We need parents for the following:
2 hour shifts in the concessions (see concessions)
Program and 50/50 raffle ticket sales: 5 parents needed from about an hour before kickoff until just before half time
Half time: 5 parents to hand out cookies and cocoa after the half time show
Fund-raising is one of our most important activities. Without the money raised through fund-raising, we can’t support the many wonderful activities in which the band takes part of or the scholarships that we award to deserving band students each year. Most events are coordinated by GW Band Boosters but the actual fund-raising is done by the band students. Other events require both parent and student involvement.
Fund raising activities include:
Raffle items – On trip years, band boosters coordinate a raffle for participating students to defray the cost of their trip costs. Enterprising students who sell enough raffle tickets can actually make spending money for their trip as each dollar raised is credited to the student who raised it.
SPRING BAKE SALE – MARCH/APRIL, EASTER TIME & FALL BAKE SALE – NOVEMBER (1 day event)
(baked goods, gifts baskets)
SALSA FEST – August (1 or 2 day event)
(hamburgers, water, sweet tea)
LATE SUMMER BBQ – SEPTEMBER (1 day event)
(chicken, potato salad, jalapenos, onion, pinto beans, bread plates, cookies, cake slices)
WINTERFEST/Family Fun Fest – DECEMBER (1 day event)
(sweet tea, hot chocolate, chili/cheese hot dogs, nachos, chips)
Games, raffles, bouncy houses
Fund raising supports:
New equipment (stage risers, special instruments, etc.)
Band trips – Every other year the band director takes band students to either an in-state or an out-of-state music competition. Band boosters have historically paid 50% of trip costs to make it more affordable for students.
Scholarships – Each year we award scholarships to band seniors.
